Futura & the Clash

"The Clash and Futura 2000 give a voice to New York's graffiti artists on this early-'80s 12". Much like the rapping he did on the Clash's song "Overpowered By the Funk," "The Escapades of Futura 2000" paints a picture of life as a graffiti artist. The music is provided by Mick Jones, which warrants the label "Music Composed by the Clash" on the front of the record sleeve. Whether or not the entire band was part of the recording is questionable; it is only certain that Mick Jones was solely credited for the song's composition. The backing beat for Futura 2000's rhymes are clearly from a time when rap was still in its infancy, giving the album a distinctly dated feel. "The Escapades of Futura 2000" has very clever rhymes that give voice to the troubles a graffiti artist experiences in his attempt to express himself. As Futura 2000 fills in the details about his urban canvas, a rather high-profile Fab Five Freddy provides the backing vocals. "The Escapades of Futura 2000" sounds surprisingly similar to the music that Mick Jones would later create after the dissolution of the Clash."
